Abstract: India is a developing country and second largest country in theworid in population, where the role of both agricultural sector and industrial sector are very important in its economic growth. Water resources management is an extremely important item in both agricultural and industrial sectors. In planning and design of water resources development projects, an accurate estimate of water available at the site of interest is required. For this purpose a long term series of stream flow data are needed. It is generally observed that stream flow data are available for shorter periods as compared to rainfall data. Therefore haydrologists and engineer.:; are always interested to extend the available observed series of flow data_ Rainfall is the single important parameter which affects runoff directly as overland flow or indirectly as sub surface and ground water flow_ An orderly sequence of steps which allows us to obtain an output of interest (catchment runoff) from a known input (rainfall) may be called a model of the hydrologic process_ The process by which rainfall is converted into runoff is complex and variable in both space and time_ Apart from the difficulties of giving a generally correct account of the physical processes,
