The study deals with the use of analytical optimisation model combined with simulation model in optimal planning and designing of a water resource system: The Salauli Irrigation Project (with some provision of water supply)system being taken as a case study. The linear analytical model provides near optimal solut-ions due to the approximations involved in linearising complex natural phenomena. Linear Programming specifies targets for irrigation which are further modified by simulation. Linear Programming model optimised the crop areas for six different suitably devised cropping patterns which could be proposed.Deck 2050 computer of University of Roorkee, Regional ,Computer Centre was used for computation. The aboiae six optimal annual irrigation requirements from L.P,Model were used as the first approximations of the design variables for simulation. However, the simulation results showed that the water requirements could be further modified., Further simulation studies were carried Out varying reservoir Capacities, Irrigation Requirements and Water Supply Requirements (one at a time keeping others Constant), Trade'-off relationships have also been developed between Annual Irrigation Requirements and Water Supply Requirements for the project reservoir capacity of 234.3612 Mrn3 satisfying the norms, (i.e. water supply requirements at 100 percent success and Irrigation Requirements....en_US
