dc.description.abstractReservoirs are created by constructing dams or barages across rivers, for the purpose of water conservation for later utilization for irrigation, hydropower, water supply etc. or for the purpose of flood control in down stream area of the dam. The need for a reservoir arises from the fact, that in general, the rate of available water supply does not match with the rate of demand of water for irrigation, power eta. either along the river course or at some far distance. Thus the main function of a reservoir is to regulate the varying supply in a natural stream, to satisfy a varying demand for varying time. Operation of reservoirs created for flood control purpose only, is relatively easy- on the other hand, reservoirs which envisage total, partial or even no flood control, need to be operated with extreme car* during a flood event. Unwise operation of such reservoirs can cause a lot of diffculties, damages and deaths in the down stream areas, Flood control operation is important even for those reservoirs which were not created primarily for the purpose, as they ala o must be operated judici-ously during a flood event so as not to cause any avoidable losses of lives and property in down stream areas.en_US
