Abstract: The transmission of real-time images and video over wireless communication channel is a challenging problem. Uncompressed digital images require considerable storage capacity and transmission bandwidth. Efficient image compression solutions are becoming more critical with the recent growth of data intensive, multimedia-based web applications. Digital compressed images are sensitive to bit errors which are typical in wireless communications. Channel noises cause severe degradation in the quality of received image. Thus a graceful degradation mechanism and error correction capability should be implemented in accordance with various image transmission scenarios. This dissertation presents a trial to address such a problem. In particular, the effect of error control coding (ECC) is investigated to protect the coded image quality against inevitable channel noise. This coding system is easy to implement and has acceptable low complexity. It has been found that error control coding guarantees to receives images with the same peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) as in the noiseless case when bit error rate (BER) is lower than 5 x 10-3 O.
