Abstract: Floods are r sponsiblc for the formation of flood pl.iins, which are built by deposition of alluvial material, Flood plains have nurtur:Gd many civilisations, and their in habitants are subjected to wide spread miseries due to floods. Forecasting, and estimation of losses duo to floods has r cently beini given a new phillip by Remote Sensing from satellites. The state of ¢Assam is annually raveged by the fury of the floods of Brahmaputa. Keeping this in viO W, a study was conducted to analyse the flood plain betwo.-°n Guwahati & Dhubr1. Landsat imageries of Bands 5 and 7 in the scale of 1:1 million with the help of topographical maps of scale 1":l mile were interpreted tto determine th -following: -- ( i) The boundary of the flood plain. ( ii) Ascertain the shift of both the left & right banks. ( iii) Calculate the excel extent of the flood plain.
