Abstract: Optimisation techniques based on mathematical programming algorithms are pawerful tools capable of providing solutions to the innumerable problems which Engineers and Planners face while planning complex water resources systems. The mathemati-cal models however with in the boundaries of a given system provides near optimal solutions because of the approximations imposed in the objective functions. Simulation on the other hand continues screening on the basis of information obtained by the optimisation techniques and tries to reproduce the system behaviour and thus helps to come to a definite decision. In the present study an attempt has been made to model the Kolar irrigation project for optimal use of water. Linear programming model,': is framed such that reservoir optimisation and crop area optimisation are done simultaneously using a single model. Simulation is proposed for further screening using the information obtained already from the linear programming model.
