Abstract: The comprehensive study deals with the use of analytical optimization and simulation models in the planning and design of a water resources system. The Gandheswari and tWprekeswar reservoir of West Bengal have been taken as a case study. Here analytical optimization model namely Linear Programming model is developed to find a reasonably possible optimal design alternative and to select a small number worthy of simulation analysis. Dwarakeswar-Gandheswari reservoir project Is located in the District of Bankura of West Bengal. Dwa.rakeswar and Gandheswari river are located in the Rupnarayan sub-basin of Ganga basin. In this system there are two reservoirs and one link canal to feed the surplus water from Dwarakeswar to Gandheswari Reservoir. In the linear programming model due to computational 'limitations the reservoir capacities and the annual irrigation targets were fixed equal to their design values. The reservoir costs were also required to be reduced to Rs 1000/ha.m. The linear programming results wore obtained in order to regulate the mean monthly flows. These were further subjected to screening by simulation to obtain desired. results.
