Estimation of the numbers and locations of the groundwater observation wells which will provide sufficient inforrlationc regarding the characteristics of ground water regime over the basin is reffered as optimal network design. Hence, the design of optimal groundwater observation wells is intended, a) to findout the number of groundwater obser-vation wells required for the purpose, and b) to suggest suitable locations ,for these stations in the concern ground water basin. The g:_o ind water observation well network in many parts of Surat and Bulsar district of Gujarat state has been developed and expanded through the years mainly for the pur-pose of mm-monitoring groundwater level and groundwater resource evaluation without serious attempt to determine the adequacy of the network for any purpose or. to asses its cost effect-iveness. ''Zh. the present study a systematic redesign of the network has been undertaken in order to examine its adequacy and to determine the arrangement that will offer the most satisfactory accuracy for the purpose of monitoring it.en_US
