dc.description.abstractThe recent acceleration in planning and construction of wells at suitable spots in the Ghaggar Basin has given rise to the question of the effects of water quality for plant as well as human consumption and livestock utilization. The extent to which watdr quality may affect can only be deter-mined by accurate predictions of the chemical constituents of . water during specific period of timo. These predictions are not only needed to estimate the effects due to various activities that is affecting ground water but also needful for the effective planning and construction of wells at proper sites. The urgent need for planning for site and construction of wells inspired the multivariate techniques to be used in z acyje At,ryj o , groundwater. In the present study a thorough and systematic approach through tha use of multivariato techniques has been initiated for ' classification, characterization and tren±-in water quality. The chemical analysis data of 157 samples collected from different zones were subioetel. to graphical approaches like Trilinec.r diagram and quantitative approaches Like Factor analysis as well as Discriminant analysis. The analyses of confined aquifer water indicated that the Ca facies in the eastern zone, which is essentially a recharging zone, is changing to Na facies in the western zone, the discharging zone. The confined aquifer water is found to be rich in Fe in addition to Na, Cl and. S0~ •en_US
