Water is one of the most important natural resources on earth, sometimes rarely available. In the context of ever increasing need for water, acute need arises for ex-ploiting the available water resource in the best possiblemanner through improved operational policies. Linear programming, dynamic programming or simulation approaches are used to bring out solutions to the problems of reservoir operations. But very little information is availablc: on the performance of these methods under drought conditions. The multiple linear regressed monthly operation technique, formulated for Uduthorehalla Irrigation Project in Karnataka State has been experimented here as a reservoir operation policy, specially to alleviate drought effects. Since available flow data belongs to a very short period, synthesized stream flows, using Thomas and Fiering model, have been used to test the effectiveness of. the formulated operation policy. Computations and analysis have been carried through IBM 370 computer as well as hand computations. By this technique it is tried here as far as possible to minimize water losses through spill overs during the wet seasons as well as deficits during the dry seasons by doing a sort of rationing of water supply keeping in view of the drought imergencies. At least the water losses as well as deficits are proportionately moderated over the entire operative period, and kept at the minimum level possible. The multiple regressed monthly operation technique is easy in formulation and application and is found to mitigate drought conditions.en_US
