Abstract: The study deals with the first stage preliminary screening design model in the context of a sequential system analysis iterative modelling of a complex water resources system. The models are developed in the context of Karanja irrigation project. The linear programming deterministic continuous model (LPDC) has been used with appropriate linear approximation of the non-linear functions. The simulation continues the screening on the basis of the information obtained from the linear programming model. It is shown in this study that the results of I,PDC model are helpful in selecting the ranges of reservoir capacity and annual `irrigation target for random sampling, for further screening by simulation. The screening model may be more effective if the loss of benefit due to irrigation deficits and also the evaporations from the reservoir are considered. A single reservoir consisting of Karanja Project Part-1 (KP-1) with reservoir capacity of 275 Mcum and annual irrigation target of 300 Mcum is proposed for Karanja water resource utilization.
