dc.description.abstract | A Power quality problem is an occurrence manifested as a nonstandard voltage, current or frequency that results in a failure or a mis-operation of end user equipments. Power quality is certainly a major concern in the present era; it becomes especially important with the introduction of sophisticated devices, whose performance is very sensitive to the quality of power supply. Voltage sags is one of the severe power quality problems, this report presents different mitigation methods to address these voltage sag/swell problems. This dissertation work presents various topologies of voltage regulators. Traditionally, an AC voltage regulator is made with a transformer tap changer, converter-inverter set. Recently, the development in power electronic devices makes the feasible implementation of Transistor-controlled ac voltage regulators, operating at medium-to-high frequency chopping mode and utilizing pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques offering higher performance. In this dissertation, the operation of various voltage regulators is illustrated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. For each topology, closed loop control for fast dynamic response to disturbances is presented. Their performance characteristics under typical conditions are also presented and compared. | en_US |
