dc.description.abstract | Railway train aerodynamic problems are closely associated with the flows occurring around the train. Much effort to speed up the train system has to date been paid on the improvement of electric motor power as well as understanding the flow around train. Reduction of energy consumption is the key point to which aerodynamic improvements can largely contribute. Railways aerodynamics has to be performed on the complete system and the influence of the many individual shape parameters is strongly coupled. It is therefore very difficult to systematically predict how a given parameter will affect the aerodynamic properties and, more generally, what combination of the parameters yields the best performance. This dissertation presents a study of aerodynamic behavior of existing electric locomotive WAG-9 at different speeds 25m/s , 50m/s , 75m/s. Drag force, flow pattern , pressure and velocity profiles for existing engine and suggested aerodynamic shapes are analyzed using commercially available CFD software for the flow simulations. Results are presented for a three-dimensional application, showing the energy saving potential of the modified shape | en_US |
