Abstract: The main function of a power system is to supply electrical energy to its customers with an acceptable degree of reliability and quality. Among many other things, the reliability of a power system depends on trouble-free functioning of power transformers. Transformers are growing up in their power handling capacity and voltage levels. Whenever there is a fault in a transformer, entire network is affected and the situation many times results in a power failure in a significant area. Earlier the protection issues of transformer use to take care once the fault occurred, but now-a-days need is felt for proactive protection of transformer. The analysis of oil-immersed gases as a useful and effective method can prevent breakdown faults through diagnosing internal faults of power transformers and proposing preventive operations. Usually the relation between faults and the reason of their existence in power equipments is complicated. In the present work a scope for chemical based artificial intelligence tool for incipient faults in transformer is being investigated. In the eventuality of chemical method fails electrical tool incorporated in parallel will help in discriminating the fault and thus helps in improving the relay accuracy.
