Abstract: The basic principle of transmission network planning is to minimize the network construction and operational cost satisfying the requirement of delivering electric power safely and reliably to load centres. A large number of contingency ranking methods are available in the literature, each has its own criterion for the assessing the system contingency. Here, we are going through the contingency ranking method based on the criterion of network overloading. The (n —1) checking has been carried out on 18 buses and 20 branches. As now a day, an addition of a new line between two buses is a big problem. This is due to the rights of way and economy consideration. The optimization of transmission corridors for power transfer has become of great importance. In this scenario, the FACTS technology is an attractive option for increasing system operation flexibility. One important FACTS component is TCSC which allows rapid and continuous changes of the transmission line impedance. To eliminate line overloading in a network, a line or a TCSC installation has been carried out between two buses step by step. For numerical example IEEE 5 — bus system has been taken out. Initially, some of the lines are in overloaded condition. Successive expansion method has been applied to determine the best location where a new line or TCSC to be installed.
