Abstract: In this work, genetic algorithm is applied to select the optimal loc(tiol'ls and number of fixed and switched capacitor banks required to be placed on a large radial distribution network under varying load conditions so as to minimize the peak power loss and energy losses while keeping the voltage at load buses within the specified limit by taking the cost of capacitors into account. Both fixed and marginal costs of . capacitors are considered separately so that required minimum number of locations (where capacitors are required to be placed) to give best possible overall performance can be obtained directly even for a large set of possible (given) redundant locations. In the sutdies, the voltage constraint is included as penalty term in the objective function as A (M _ilt ,m,r )2 Further, instead of only assuming the capacitors as a constant power (KVaI) source, it is also been considered as a constant impedance load in optimization problem itself. And comparision of performances for both considerations (capacitor as constant KVar source and as constant impedance load) are also presented. Also possible convergence criterion based on the difference of best fitness and average fitness of population is suggested to minimize the CPII ti/lie required to Cl gre(lt extent with a VC/y small sacrifice ill overall saving.
