The rapid evolution in the field,of -telecommunication has led to the emergence of advanced digital system called Integrated. Services Digital Network (ISDN). The ISDN has a primary aim of integrating. the voice and:nonvo.ice services. However, ISDN can not support certain services like motion picture, interconnection of high speed•LANS, HDTV because of limited channel bandwidth of ISDN. So to support all these- advanced services into a single network Broadband-ISDN was. proposed. CCITT. has recommended Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) as the technique for switching and multiplexing In B-ISDN. This dissertation 'addresses itself to the study of a switch. model for ATM networks through simulation. Banyan networks are multistage interconnection networks with self routing capability which is suitable for ATM switches. The switch is provided with input and output buffers, one per switch inlet and one per switch outlet. Also, the switch is.assumed.to operate with an internal speed up, meaning thereby is that more than one packet per slot can be transferred from input buffers to output buffers. The contention occurs when more, than one cell from input buffers is destined for the same output.: this gives rise to cell blocking due to contention. The contention resolution has, therefore become a critical issue of research in the field of switching technology. A contention resolution algorithm using cell bypass queuing is proposed in this .dissertation. Further its performance Is studied through simulation..en_US
