Abstract: In case of modern power systems,it is required that the system should be as much reliable as possible, meeting the consumers' load demand with the specified quality of supply. So,Bulk Power System Reliability Evaluation i.e.performance assessment of the combined generation and transmission system is very important and essential as it provides the information about the system performance at consumers' load points. The evaluation process ,first of all, requires modelling of generation and transmission systems and the consumer load demands taking into account the random failures of system components and the unforeseen variations in load demand. Then the load flow is performed to check the network performance i.e.-whether there is any violation of system parameters or not . If any violation takes place, the efforts are made to alleviate it either by generation-rescheduling or by load-shedding. System performance is then Judged in terms of some suitably defined reliability indices which are described in brief in the thesis. In addition to this,Automatic Contingency Selection- method and the minimal-cutset approach for outage analysis are also discussed.Automatic Contingency Selection helps in reducing, the compu€a-tional time for the calculation of reliability indices while the minimal-cutlet approach helps in detecting various failure modes possible in the system.
