Issue Date: 1990
Abstract: Dynamic analysis of pile supported structures has drawn the attention of researchers ssince Niigata and Alaska earthquakes in 1934. This thesis presents a numerical scheme, for the analysis of lateral vibration of pile under seismic loading, based on energy principle. The soil was idealized as non-linear elasto-plastic medium with viscous resistance. The pile response obtained, from this numerical scheme was compared with an experimental study. The experiment was conducted on a large diameter bored pile (well foundation) embedded in sandy soil. Impact type excitation was given to the well foundation. A comparison of the predicted response from the numerical scheme and the experimental observations emphasised the need of a better simulation of soil rheological model under earthquake type loading.
