The failure of Civil Engineering structures occur during earthquakes due to various reasons amongst which liquifaction is a major one. This can be hazardous if it occurs in any foundation soil The proposed new aqaueduct near Roorkee town in the river Solani has its foundation mainly on sand deposit. The problem for investigation of likely liquifaction at the site during an earthquake was referred to the Department of earthquake Engineering, U.O.P.,00rkee. S.P.T counts for 14 bore holes in the site are obtained from the soil report given by Irrigation Research Institute, U.P. The data for the other soil properties viz. sieve analysis, density etc. of the soil are also obtained from the report.[ These tests have also been performed in the departmental laboratory]. Analytical studies based on empirical approaches given by (i) Seed and Idriss (1970), (ii) chinese Building Code (1974), (iii) Seed et al (1983) and (iv) Japanese State-of-Art (1986) have been carried. out. All these approaches use the values of S.P.T results directly or indirectly. The Seed and Idriss .approach showed there could be liqauifaction in the top tom depth of soil at the site. The Chinese Building Code approach which is applicable upto a depth of 15m showed that the liquefaction is likely. The Seed et al (1983) approach has also indicated liquifaction in top layer of soil. The Japanese State-of-Art (1986) approach pointed out that the liquefaction could occur in the top 15m depth of soil at the site.en_US
