Issue Date: | 1989 |
Abstract: | It has been observed in many earthquakes that the foundation soil consisting of saturated sands behaves like a liquid and shear strength of soil is completely lost. The associated phenomenon has been known as Liquefaction. The catastrophic failure due to soil liquefaction have been observed in many earthquakes.A record of 38 historical earthquakes has been summarized by seed 1968, where major land slides have been occurred due to soil liquefaction. Different authors have investigated this problem in detail and different methods of test and test equipments are in use (Gupta and Prakash,1980). Based on these studies, the following are in use to predict possibility of liquefaction. i) Deterministic methods (a) Simplified method (b) Progressive failure method ii) Probabilistic (a) Local model (b) Source model iii) Method Based on Past Experiences. |
