dc.description.abstractClassical earth pressure theories proposed by Coulomb and Rankine for static case and Mononobe-Okabe for dynamic case consider only force equilibrium conditions and neglect moment equilibrium condition. They do not give explicitly the pressure distribution behind the wall. However, the magnitude of the earth' force, the shape of the rupture wedge and-the rigid •body behavior of failure wedge assumed in these theories appear to be in reasonable agreement with experimental data.. 'Prakash and Basavanna (1969) proposed the first method- which can predict static and dynamic earth pressure distribution. However, some of their assumptions do not appear to be reasonable. The numerical method proposed by Joshi and Prajapati (1982) overcomes this difficulty, but the predicted pressure distribution is not unique. Das (1988) proposed a method of explicit pressure distribution considering soil-wedge deformation. However, the predicted pressures by his method under certain conditions exceed the limiting passive pressures near the top •end of the wall and, hence, are not realistic...en_US
