Abstract: Approximate methods for dynamic analysis of gravity dams damns are important for aseismic design of gravity/at the pre- liminary design stages. Several simplified methods have so far been developed for this purpose. The purpose of this thesis is to study the dynamic resd-ponse of concrete gravity dims with flexible foundation, so the existing codal provision could be modified to include the effect of flexibility of foundation. For this studytransler function approach has, been adopted to analyse dams of different heights. Also to overcome the tedious hand calcui Lion involved in response spectrum method of I.S. 1893-1984, which is often used by a designer for designing gravity dam at preliminary stages, o, computer program has been developed for the method. It has been observed that, t Sze effective damping of foundation-structure system influences the response of a dam considerably. The base shear and base moment for dam with flexi-ble foundation are less than those for darn with fixed base when the effective damping is taken into account. When the effective damping due to foundation structure interaction is not considered the base shear and base moments are observed to be more than the corresponding values for fixed base condition.
