Abstract: The earthquakes, causes concern over the protection of important structures. The conventional ductility based techniques have proved to be inadequate or inefficient. Whereas the base isolation techniques, have been found to be effective and efficient in reducing the effect of earthquake on structure. In this thesis, the effectiveness of a base isolated containment structure has been investigated using R-FBI. A computer program, ROBIS, has been developed to evaluate the response of the base isolated structure using incemental-iterative step-by-step implicit integration scheme. The effect of coefficient of friction, stiffness of isolation system, damping of isolation system etc. have been studied. A comparative study of base isolated structure with the fixed base response has been made. Analysis for low and high frequency shocks has been carried out. A systematic design procedure for R-FBI bearing has been also presented. Isolation has been found to be reducing the acceleration and relative displacement of storeys considerably. Consequently a reduction from 50% to 80% in, shear force and bending moment has been obtained in isolated structure.
