Abstract: An experimental study has been conducted. to study the behaviour of unreinforced and reinforced earth backfill retaining walls in at-rest condition during vibration. The experiments were conducted in a steel tank of size 2m x lm x 0.75m excited at the base with the help of motor and oscillator to produce simusoidal motion. A steel sheet wa.s used as a rigid retaining wall model and- dry fine to medium sand was used as backfill, The reinforcing materials were bamboo and aluminium. Strips of length equal to 0.6m and section 3mmx25mm were used behind the 65 cm. high retaining wall and 'the centre to centre spacing of strips along the lengt.h'of the wall was 20 ems. arid along height of the wall 10 cros. 5 nos, of pressure-cells were embedded in t•he wall to record the earth pressure at different elevation. The tank was excited at, frequencies of 5 cps and 10 cps with acceleration 0.125 g to 0.25g.,...
