Abstract: The problem of stability of terraces developed on hill slopes is quite common, One such problem has occurred at Hathiary, Lakhawar dam site colony, Yamuns valley Project,. Where the terraces at the two sites namely. south upper and north upper have been developed on hill wash (Talus cone) soil. In the study. _k .. over all and part slope stability of the terraces at both the sites has been evaluated for static and dynamic (pseudostatic) conditions, The slope stability analysis using the concept of surface failure for cohesionless soil, wedge type failure for cohesive and non cohesive (0—soil) and circular failure for C —0 soils have been carried out and safety factors have been obtained. It has been found that the terrace slopes are safe and there is no need for any flattening or treatment- - The safe distance of the buildings from the retaining walls are calculated and provided so that the retaining walls not designed for the building loads and also the stability of the building is not dependent on the stability of retaining walls. It has been recorded that with this approach a relatively thin and there by economical retaining walls can be adopted 'for the site as .,'' proper. design of retaining wall is a necessary part of terrace development.
