Abstract: Identification of noise sources in diesel engines is a quite complicated task, but one which is essential to engine manufacturers attempting to build a quieter engines keeping in view recent noise emission norms. Since long many attempts have been made in developing methods to identify noise sources in diesel engines. This dissertation reviews the major noise source identification techniques used and gives a detailed description of recent intensity technique used for noise source identification. An experimental setup has been prepared for measuring noise from a DI Diesel Engine under different operating conditions. Then experiments have been conducted to obtain sound intensity and power estimation over all the sides of the engine to the minute detail under various operating conditions and then various sources and sinks have been located all over the radiating engine surface and also noise , source identification have been carried out by sound power ranking. Flywheel cover has been found to be the major source of noise followed by the engine block. Sound power ranking of different surfaces under different frequency bands has also been carried out. Sound power is highest at 2KHz frequency band. Also the results show that the lower part of the engine block is quite noisy. This suggests that the noise transmission from connecting rod to the crankshaft is highest. In the end after identifying the most important noise sources some methods have been suggested for reduction of noise from the engine. The major modifications can be applied on the flywheel cover. Also the cheapest method of reducing noise is the partial enclosure and damping treatment on the major sources. The lower part of block needs to be modified which includes modification in bearing beams and gear train.
