Tires largely cause highway noise and therefore manufacturers are trying to design quieter models. It is supposed that the researches will enable one to reduce highway noise in the future. As for as the road surface design is concerned, it is believed that the tire tread pattern can be modified to reduce the noise level while maintaining safety level and thus supporting further research in collaboration with industry. Test methods are also being developed to allow different road surface and tire designs to be compared in terms of their noise performance. Speed is also a factor in tire noise generation. Speed limits have recently been imposed to help to reduce noise in residential areas. Speed control has improved the flow of traffic and consequently reduced air pollution, but has had less noticeable effect on noise levels. In this dissertation an attempt has been made to measure the tire noise. To fulfill this purpose, a setup is fabricated and tire noise is measured. Tire noise is measured with the help of sound level meter B&K 2238 type mediator. It is measured with altering the parameters like speed, load, tread pattern, and inflation pressure. An experimental investigation has also been undertaken to assess the noise level variation with these parameters. Frequency spectrum is also plotted for various conditions. For the plotting of frequency spectrum a software is used named BZ7123, which is loaded in the sound level meter. The mechanism of tire noise generation and its measurement techniques has also been discussed in this report.en_US
