Issue Date: 1984
Abstract: No amount of safety taken in the design of super-structure is helpful in the event of liquefaction of foundat-ion soil, The problem has attracted large number of investi-gatora world over. The following are in use to predict possibility of l iquef a ct ion. i) Methods based on laboratory studies ii) Statistical and probabilistic approaches iii) Past experience during the earthquakes. Basically for the detailed analysis the laboratory data either from small samples tests or from large sample tests are used to predict liquefaction. However no uniform agreement could be achieved in the laboratory information obtained from different laboratory tests, obtained by different investigators i) Qualitative as well as quantitative differences have been observed by different investigators on triaxial testing, ii) Simple shear test apparatus, Triaxial test or torsional testing presents vast quantitative difference. iii) Test results on triaxial testing for gravelly soils appeared to be somewhat anomalous to the known field performance for gravelly soils.,
