The response of dam to seismic loading is the combined effect of the interaction of the three systems namely dam, foundation and reservoir. The dynamic analysis procedure in vogue does consider interaction between dam and foundation but the interaction of the dam with the reservoir is represent-ed by virtual mass method. In this paper a two dimensional plane strain analysis of a masonry dam is carried cut using fl aid elements and thus considering interaction of dam—foundation and reservoir. Analysis is carried out in time domain using Newmark's direct integration scheme. The effects/of size of foundation mesh, foundation inertia and variation in stiffness of foundation on the response of dam are studied. The comparison of virtual mass method with fluid elements is made, and the effect of refined and coarse mesh of dam fixed to the base is studied by compar-ing the responses of the dam obtained in terms of displacement, acceleration, and principal stresses.en_US
