dc.description.abstractLiquefaction has often been the main cause of catas-trophic damages to structures resulting in loss of life and property. Since the catastrophic damages due to soil lique, faction in Alaska (196+) and Niigata (1964) great interest has been depeloped in the phenomenon of .liquefaction in the seis-mically active regions of the world.- There are several methods available for evaluating liquefaction. But a review of litera-ture shows that none of them are free from limitations. One cif the important tool with design engineers is to rely on precedent experience a technique which has been the mainstay of soil mechanics and foundation engineering problems since its original inception. Different investigators have given different methods based on past experience and these are widely used in evaluating liquefaction even for sites df.-important structures. But these methods are based on limited experience available from past. In the present study an attempt is made to make the informations from past experience upto-date and to identify the conditions of liquefaction development. ¢*n evaluation of the methods based on past experience is also made in the study.en_US
