Abstract: The coefficient of Elastic Uniform Compression, Cu, is an important parameter in the design of the Machine Foundations. The various factors, likely to affect the value of Cu can be the properties of soil; type and shape of foundation; surcharge and the nature of the loading. None of the theories available till now includes the effect of the water table on Cu. This work is an attempt in this direction and consists of an experimental study of the problem. The dissertation also deals withh the effect of static stress, total stress on the value of Cu. The qualitative analysis, in respect of the above parameters, has been done and is presented in form of various plots between various variables. This study demonstrates that the total stress along with the static stress, and the ratio of the depth of water table from the footing to the width of foting play an important role in the determination of Cu. The effect of the width of the base plates has also been incorporated in the thesis. Hence care must be taken in selection of size of base plate and a proper estimation of static stress is required before ensuring a correct range of values of Cu in the field.
