Issue Date: 2003
Abstract: Noise is an unwanted or unpleasant sound; therefore lot of work has been carried out to control noise in various fields (e.g., Control of Engine Noise). As far as welding noise is concerned, it is relatively lower than the engine noise and it may contain some phenomenal information about the welding process. The present study is an attempt to find out the noise pattern for various welding parameter conditions. The investigations are made to study the variation of sound level generated during gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with different parameter levels. The sound frequency spectrum for different deposited weld metal has been plotted. The bead geometry dimensions i.e., bead width, reinforcement, penetration and HAZ width are also measured for different welds deposited at various parameter levels. The pattern of bead geometry with corresponding parameter levels has been graphically represented. Finally the investigation has been made to correlate the bead geometry with the generated sound level for different parameter levels. It has been observed that overall noise level increases with the increase in welding voltage, welding current and shielding gas flow rate while no definite trend has been observed with speed.
