Abstract: Critical evaluatic.n of the ?xisting literature on dynamic and earthquake forces on pile foundations embedded in .soils, reveals the need for further studies on this subject This thesis presents the theoretical and experimental studies which were performed, to investigate the behaviour of pile foundations under dynamic loads, particularly earthquakes. The investigations have been carried out in a logical and sequential manner. The soil pile (physical) syst'm has been idealised as a lumped-mass-spring system. The vibration characteristics of this rrr)del has been determined with the aid of, a transfer s:olutif.>n appr?ach. Suitable numerical techniques and computer programmes, have hei evolved for this purpose. The performance of the mathematical ntdel and the method of analysis have been tosted,by predicting the dynamic resp, nse of piles embedded in soils in which : 1. S.)i1 modulus can be considered to remaiT!`coonstant with depth. 2. Soil rtr~dulus can be. considered to vary proportional to depth.
