Abstract: Dynamics of railway vehicles is concerned with lateral stability, riding comfort and running safety. Several studies both theoretical and experimental have been carried out around the globe to find solution to these problems. There are two basic areas that limit vehicle -performance on tangent track: (1) Instability caused by external input from track irregularities, and (2) Self- excited instabilities inherent in the vehicle design. The present work is aimed to analyze the lateral stability of the four-axle freight vehicle by self-excited instability inherent in vehicle design through 25 degrees of freedom model on a roller rig. Results of 1/5 scale model and. full-scale model of freight vehicle were compared with the results of railway vehicle on the track. The results show that roller rig is a very useful tool for studying the dynamic performance of railway vehicle and in designing new type of rail vehicle. Roller rig has the advantages of avoiding field test and saving costs. The correlation ratios were found for correlating the results of full-scale model and 1/5 scale model on roller rig with the results on the railway track. Software has been developed to evaluate the vehicle instability and critical
