Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) has become the first choice for coating of bioimplant in past decade due to its chemical and structural similarity with the mineral phase of bone and teeth. It is used as a coating material for various body implants so that the implant get well adjusted and well tolerated by the body environment. In recent years it was observed that there is continuous increase in the number of patients who undergoes bioimplant surgery, so there is a clear need of large production of effective HA coating on the bioimplant. During last two decades various methods were developed for HA synthesis. Due to inherent properties like low processing temperature, effective molecular mixing and suitability to generate nanosized particles sol-gel processes are preferred. An attempt has been made to synthesize Hydroxyapatite (HA) powder by Sol- Gel technique using two different chemical reagent (Ca(NO3)2.4H20 and P205), followed by its characterization. The synthesized powder was then used for coating on SS-304L substrate by the pulse laser deposition (PLD) technique. The coating was carried out at different substrate temperatures to evaluate their effect on Ca/P ratio. The HA coated substrate was further characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) to revel its phase content, morphology and types of bond present. A porosity measurement of the coating was also done to check its favorability regarding tissue growth. Lastly to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of HA coating, it was tested in simulated body fluid.
