Abstract: Mechanism synthesis for three prescribed positions are simple because that number of precision points corresponds to the maximum number of prescribed positions for which a four-bar linkage may be synthesized by linear methods using standard dyad form. In case of three prescribed positions the linear solution can be obtained whereas for the four and five prescribed positions of motion, the equations are transcendental and linear solutions are not possible. The present work expands on the complex number technique and the standard dyad form to investigate the four and five-precision point cases. This dissertation involves the synthesis of planar four-bar mechanisms for four and five prescribed precision points. In case of four precision point synthesis, equations are solved by using compatibility linkage method (proposed by Erdman and Sandor) whereas five position synthesis equations are solved by continuation method. It also includes the plots for the variation of static performance parameters like transmission angle and mechanical advantage (angular velocity ratio) at various positions of the mechanisms
