Abstract: Chemical composition analysis, micro-structural investigation and mechanical properties like hardness and tensile strength have been determined on 72T & 90T rail steels procured from northern railway, Roorkee. Microstructure variations have been observed in head, web & foot -region. Similarly hardness and tensile strength variations have been observed in head, web & foot region of the steel. Higher hardness is observed in the head and foot region and lower hardness is observed in the web region. Similarly higher YS & UTS have been observed in head & foot region and lower YS & UTS have been observed in web region. Similar trend has been observed in the 90T rail steel in terms of microstructure & mechanical properties. However, overall value of proof strength, tensile strength and hardness have been found to be higher in 90T rail steel than 72T rail steel for corresponding points. This has been attributed to higher carbon content and relatively faster cooling in 90T rail steel. r
