The surface of gray cast iron has been modified by TIG welding process. 25, 35, & 45 A of currents have been used to melt the surface of the gray cast iron. Microstructural characterization of these modified surfaces has been done. Hardness measurements & dry sliding wear tests have been performed on these modified surfaces of gray cast irons. It has been observed that with increase in welding current, the microstructure of gray cast iron has been refined & some chunky graphite flakes have appeared with long graphite flakes in ferrite matrix. Hardness has been found to increase with increase in welding current. Wear resistance of the surface of gray cast iron has been found to increase with increase in the welding current. The increased wear resistance & hardness of these modified surfaces have been explained on the basis of microstructural changes occurring at the surfaces of gray cast irons.en_US
