Abstract: | Two shafts (medium carbon steel) of a passenger ropeways were removed from its service in order to examine its soundness and give proper suggestion whether it was suitable for further use or not. If it might be used what would be its remaining life. Hence we have examined these two shafts using various non-destructive and destructive tests. In non-destructive test visual examination, dye penetrant method, magnetic particle testing and ultrasonic testing have been carried out. In destructive testing, tensile properties and hardness values has been determined. Specimens from three different locations viz, surface, center and in between surface and center have been taken for this purpose. Samples from these locations have also taken to study the morphology of structure of the steel. Fractured surface of tensile test specimen has examined in scanning electron microscope in order to determine the mode of fracture of these specimen... |
