Experimentally the welding stress and distortion developed during the w mild steel plates has been studied. The magnitude of transverse shrinkage s~-distortion generated during welding under the unrestrained welding of butt joint is the main objective of the study. Effect of variation of weld area has been studied. Weld area has been varied by using different plate thickness (10mm, 12mm, and 25mm). In the present investigation, mild steel plates of 10, 12, & 25mm thick are used. Single V groove (10, 12 mm thick) along with conventional groove and narrow groove (25 mm) are used as joint designs for welding these plates. Effect of variation of weld areas respect to the stresses developed is studied be varying the welding processes. SMAW, GMAW, continuous current and pulsed current had been studied. From the study it has been observed that pulsed current GMA welding is advantageous than continuous current GMA welding. It is also observed about the beneficial of narrow groove design over conventional groove design in 25mm thick plates.en_US
