Abstract: the term ion-exchange is generally understood to mean ij ihe exchange of ions of like sign between a solution and a I pervious, insoluble matrix in contact with the solution, which lean either be solid or liquid, organic or inorganic and synthetic or natural* The essential requirements of an ion exchanger are that it be of high mol cular weight, Insoluble in water and capable of exchanging mobile ions with an aqueous Aphase* Commonly used ion are, generally, high molecular weight polyelectrolytes having cross-linked structure S carrying fixed ionic groups* The porous or layered structure | permits the movement of labile eounteriens bound to the fixed ionic groups* Though in many resiocts ion-exchange resembles adsorption and sometimes the term adsorption is used for lonexchange, yet the chief difference is that lon-excnange is a stoichiometric process, while in adsorption the adsorbent takes ......................
