FORMULATION OF PROPOSAL FOR ISO 9001 CERTIFICATION OF IIT ROORKEE

Abstract

In the present work an effort has been made to propose ISO Certification for IIT Roorkee and implement the guidelines of ISO. The objective was to standardize the entire working of the institute with documented procedures and lay down the foundation of continual improvement, so that the non-uniformities amongst various departments may be reduced to minimum. Key aspects of ISO along with its brief history have been discussed and difference between earlier (1994) and the latest version has also been stated. Description of latest ISO 9000:2000 standards have been made and its relevance to educational Institutes is discussed. Following the guidelines of ANSI Z 1.11, the clauses of ISO has been interpreted and procedure to obtain ISO certification by IIT Roorkee has been proposed after discussions with officials of various certifying agencies. The existing procedures and processes have been understood with the help of administrative office of IIT Roorkee. The concepts and practical after effects of ISO certification of educational institutes have been discussed with the director and MR of ISO certified Institutions. The advices of a consultant of TQM have been taken and ISO certification of IIT Roorkee has been discussed in detail. Role of consultants and various certifying agencies has also been listed. The responsibilities of top management of IIT Roorkee after certification are also proposed considering current procedures and discussion with a TQM consultant and officials of various certifying agencies. Few procedures have been proposed as per ISO guidelines and a sample quality manual of IIT Roorkee is also prepared. The Quality Policy & Quality Objectives of the Institute are proposed as required for ISO certification. The changes required in the existing organization structure has been studied and listed along with the organizational charts. Advantages of ISO certification to XL educational institutes and its likely advantages to IIT Roorkee has been proposed. It is further proposed to introduce a paperless (electronic) mode of communication within the Institute with the likely benefits of this concept. Finally existing system of the Institute has been critically discussed and ISO certification has been proposed. Along with IIT status, an ISO status will be like another feather in the cap of the Institute.
