Tunnels are usually constructed because of topographic constraints or in order to reduce traffic congestion in urban areas. The air quality in a tunnel can easily deteriorate if the air pollutants emitted from the vehicles are not promptly diluted because a traffic tunnel is an enclosed or a partially enclosed space. The situation becomes worse during traffic jams where more pollutants are emitted at low vehicle speeds and accumulate in the tunnel, which can pose serious health hazards. A computational study was carried out to investigate the flow field and pollutant dispersion in a long highway ventilated traffic tunnel. The ANSYS ICEM CFD code is used to create geometrical models and generate meshes. The ANSYS CFX code is used for the simulation of pollutant dispersion in the highway tunnel. Pressure is used as the opening boundary condition in the tunnel. Three-dimensional turbulent flow and dispersion of gaseous pollutants carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in a road tunnel was modeled using the standard k—c turbulence model. Vehicle emissions were estimated from the measured traffic flow rates and modeled as sources along the tunnel floor. Results from simulations include air velocity, flow rates, and pollution concentrations along the tunnel.en_US
