Abstract: The selection of cutting tools and cutting conditions is very difficult due to uncertainty and vagueness in machining operations. Due to this ill formed vagueness fuzzy logic is the best technique for selection of cutting tools and cutting conditions. Present work aims at the development of an expert system for selection of cutting tools and cutting conditions in turning operation by using fuzzy logic. The system consists of three modules a data base, a cutter selection module a cutting condition design module. The data base consists of four data files work material data file, machine tool data file, machining plan data file and cutter data file. The cutter selection module is developed based on fuzzy logic in which the cutter selection is conducted in three steps. First, the input information is fuzzified, then by using the fuzzy correlation functions, cutters are selected, then the selected cutters are searched against the cutter data file to check the availability. The cutting condition design module is developed based on fuzzy non-linear programming. The fuzzy expert system is written in C + and runs in PC/386 compatible computer under DOS and UNIX. The expert system developed is tested for an example. It is showed how the system can handle vague data and select the cutter which is having highest fuzzy membership function. For selection of cutting conditions the constrains applied are assumed to be vague and calculated optimal machining parameter at various aspiration costs. The satisfaction level for the job shop manager at each aspiration cost is provided.
