Abstract: Prediction of the elevation in the ambient noise level in and around the plant, on account of. the installation of any industrial unit forms an essential component of its environmental impact assessment which has become mandatory for the clearance of any major industrial project. This . dissertation, briefly reviews the damaging effects of noise on the community, radiation pattern of different types of sources, the path of sound propagation, and the factors affecting the noise propagation along the path. Also . it discusses the shielding effect of barriers, wind and temperature gradient effects. Finally it attempts to describe the noise modelling techniques and identifies the need of using knowledge-based computerized model for such predictions.
