dc.description.abstract | A device located at the top of a continuous caster that regulates the flow of molten steel is known as tundish. In modern day steelmaking, tundish is designed to provide maximum opportunity for carrying out various metallurgical operations such as inclusion separation, flotation, alloying etc. Mixing in continuous casting tundish is affected by the flow behavior of molten steel inside the tundish in the sense that some geometry encourages short circuiting whereas others do not. Present study aims at studying the mixing phenomena inside the tundish by changing the geometry of the tundish. The study has been carried out by tracer dispersion study. Physical modeling study has been done using T-shape, Delta shape and Boat shape tundish to find out different tundish volumes for the optimal tundish configuration for better mixing inside the tundish and optimized tundish flow. From the experiment performed it was found that the by use of flow modifier (dam) the MRT as well as the ratio of mixed to dead volume are being increased significantly. Comparison of Boat and T-Shape tundish revealed that MRT as well as mixed to dead volume ratio of T-Shape tundish are higher than boat tundish. | en_US |
