The Cutting Rate-Tool Life Function (R-T-F) concept has been used for optimisation of machining parameters. The concept can be considered as a new and a simple one. A second order non-linear tool life model for tool-work material combination of carbide and mild - steel has been developed using Response Surface Methodology. The R-T-F curve which is the. locus of constant metal removal rate and constant tool -life plots was developed on R-T ' and lnF-inV plane. The R-T-F so developed was used to optimise the cutting -parameters (V,F,D) for economic optimum conditions of minimum cost and maximum production rate. The practical working region of machining process has also been identified and the cost optima and production rate optima on the .R-T-F curve were located assuming suitable cost dataen_US
