Abstract: The slot-entry hydrostatic journal bearings are extensively used now-a-days in machine tool industries due to their improved load carrying capacity over recessed bearings. The slot-entry bearing has the following features, namely, commercial availability, improved hydrostatic performance. over recessed bearings, good hydrodynamic and hybrid performance, lack of directional variations in stiffness, large bearing lands in the event of sit-down operation and there is no need for external restrictors or non-return valves. A review of the studies concerning non-recessed bearing especially slot-entry hydrostatic/hybrid journal bearings has been presented in the literature. It has been observed that the stability characteristics of the slot-entry hybrid bearings have not been studied. Therefore, the work includes the study of static and dynamic characteristics and stability characteristics of a slot-entry journal bearing. The performance of slot-entry hydrostatic/hybrid journal bearing has been studied for two different configurations, i.e., symmetric and asymmetric, and for different slot width ratios (SWR = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75). The performance characteristics of the slot-entry journal bearings have also been compared with that of hole-entry journal bearing, for the same operating and geometric parameters. For computing the bearing performance characteristics, the Reynold's equation governing the flow of lubricant in - the clearance with the equation of flow through the slot restrictor as a constraint, has been solved using appropriate boundary conditions. The flow field solution domain has been discretised using 4-noded two dimensional isoparametric elements. The static and dynamic performance characteristics of slot-entry hydrostatic journal bearing for different slot widtl.; ratios and configurations has been presented in graphical and tabular form with the logical conclusions. It is observed that, depei .'.ing upon the desired performance, the particular bearing configuration and slot width ratio can be selected. (
