Abstract: In diesel engine cylinder block, mechanical and thermal loads act simultaneously. Because of high temperature involved, the thermal stress induced are expected to be significant. The available literature regarding heat transfer, temperature distribution and stress analysis in cylinder liner has been reviewed and a summary is presented. Using Finite Element Method an analysis has been carried out for the determination of deformation, temperature and stresses in the cylinder block. A computer software based on the finite element analysis has been developed. The authenticity of the program has been checked for different sample problems. The present software gave quite accurate results. The deformation and transient stresses in the cylinder block have been determined using the present program and the results have been presented. The magnitudes of thermal stresses are quite large as compared to the magnitudes of stresses obtained for pressure loads.
